By combining Zappshelter's custom canopies with Elite Precast Concrete's bay blocks Tarmac's Tunstead Quarry has found a winning solution to its storage challenges. This partnership has not only addressed immediate production concerns but also paved the way for significant improvements in efficiency and environmental stewardship.

The heart of the matter lies in the quarry's growing production volumes and the critical need to protect dry materials from the harsh Peak District weather. Steve Cox, cement grinding production co-ordinator at Tarmac, highlighted the costly issue of clinker re-crushing due to exposure, a problem that demanded swift action.

Enter Zappshelter's bespoke solution — two imposing 17m wide by 56m long shelters, sporting custom grey canopies and mounted on Elite Precast Concrete's Legato® blocks. These imposing structures offered both durability and accessibility.

The open-ended design facilitates easy stock rotation, while the rapid installation process — completed within weeks and requiring no groundwork — showcases the solutions efficiency.

The benefits of this innovative approach are manifold. Environmental gains are significant, with reduced power consumption and lower emissions from machinery. Production capabilities have soared, allowing for extended planning windows and ensuring consistent customer satisfaction.

Perhaps most impressive is the shelter's resilience, these British-made structures, mounted on Legato® interlocking blocks, stand firm against the Peak District's notoriously challenging weather. "The Zappshelters have weathered some storms up here in Buxton. We're renowned for being quite high up, with constant weather impacts, but the Zappshelters have not moved an inch," said Mr Cox.

Along with the Zappshelter's speedy construction and reliability, thanks in part to Elite Precast's Legato® block base, Mr Cox was also impressed and reassured by the level of support from the team. "Although we didn't need it, Zappshelter were just a call away for any remedial work," he said.

This success story at Tunstead Quarry serves as a shining example of how innovative thinking and collaborative solutions can transform industrial challenges into opportunities for growth, efficient and environmental responsibility.
